Move from your center... Mike Taylor, mover and healer master, founder of Strala.
What does it mean to move from your middle? How can I do it?
We practice this a good deal at Strala, and you'll hear of it also in East Asian art forms, including Tai Chi. Your center - both literally and figuratively - is the source of your power, your feeling, your intuition. It's in your nature to move from here. But it takes practice to do it really well. Here's how to begin.
As a start, forget about yoga poses for a moment. As soon as people try to do poses, it's much harder to be you - to be natural. So start by being you.
Just stand where you are, feet apart by a little more than the width of your shoulders, natural and comfortable. Let your arms relax by your sides, and soften your knees so there is a small bend in them.
Now roll your belly around toward the left, so it points to the left, and let your body follow leaning a bit to the left. Then roll your belly back through center and toward the right, leaning a little into your right foot.
Keep rolling your belly from side to side in this way. Notice that if your arms are relaxed, soft, they will move. If you roll side to side continuously, your arms will swing easily from side to side. Not because you are trying to move them, but because they go along for the ride. Your arms are attached to your middle.
This is a beginning. With practice, it's possible to move your whole body easily in this way.
